Cecilia obtained her PhD in Chemistry from Rice University, where her research involved working with boron nitride nanomaterials, including studying dispersions of hexagonal boron nitride to obtain macroscopic materials, and the interactions of boron nitride nanotubes with photoluminescent metal complexes. During this time, she also served as the Lab Safety Officer for the research group, ensuring research safety protocols and appropriate waste management were followed. Previously, she graduated with a BS in Chemistry from Tecnológico de Monterrey, where she studied the preparation of new co-amorphous drug formulations. She also assisted in Introduction to Research courses and taught General Chemistry Lab.
Cecilia joined the ORS team at the University of Chicago as the PME Lab Safety Specialist in 2024. She interacts with the PME research groups, the Office of Research Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety on research safety issues and works with PME leadership to implement strategies to foster a culture of safety within the school.
