Madeleine Phelan was hired by the Office of Research Safety in September 2023 as an Administrative Assistant. A UChicago legacy, she enrolled in the College at the University of Chicago in 2017. During her four years in Chicago, Madeleine worked as an office assistant and social-media manager for two downtown non-profit organizations- Kids in Danger, which advocated for children’s product safety, and Big Shoulders Fund, an organization that promoted and provided funding for Chicago Catholic schools. While working for KID in 2019, she was promoted to senior program assistant and organized reports, research projects, press conferences, and galas for the organization. Madeleine worked as a Summer Fellow for Big Shoulders in 2019 and 2020, and managed enrollment data, marketing, and social media accounts for five Catholic schools in Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods. Upon graduating with honors from UChicago in 2021, she became a Teach for America Ohio corps member and taught 8th grade science for two years at a public charter school in Cleveland, where she also gained experience in data management and administrative work. In 2023 Madeleine returned to the University of Chicago to study non-profit management, and joined the Office of Research Safety, where she uses her prior experience and skills to reliably assist the department’s Administration.
