Biosafety Officer, Select Agent Alternate Responsible Official
John C. Bivona received his Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois State University, with an emphasis in Environmental Health and Safety in 1994. He began his career working for an Environmental Health and Safety Consultant and then in 2000 was hired by The University of Chicago (UC) Environmental Health and Safety Department where he served for 8 years in multiple roles including Industrial Hygienist, Environmental Health and Safety Officer and Alternate Responsible Official for the UC Select Agent Program.
In 2009, he was hired by the UC Office of Biological Safety as a Biosafety Officer and Alternate Responsible Official at the Howard T. Ricketts Laboratory (HTRL) located on the campus of Argonne National Laboratory. He served on the UC advisory committee to construct the HTRL and is currently a voting member of the UC Select Agent Institutional Biosafety Committee.
In his current role he serves as the primary point of contact for the UC Select Agent Program at the HTRL. He oversees all aspects of Biosafety, Biosecurity and Incident Response, including all communications related to the program, both internally within the program and externally with the CDC and USDA. He manages records related to laboratory and facility inspections, training of personnel and enrollment of investigators. He also serves as liaison between the HTRL and Argonne National Labs and the Department of Energy.
He is a Registered Biosafety Professional with the American Biological Safety Association and has numerous certifications including OSHA 40 – Hour HAZMAT, OSHA Hazardous Material Handling, OSHA 510 – Standards for General Industry, First Receiver Decontamination for Hospitals and FEMA Incident Command Systems for Health Care Organizations.
